“Be Still and the Earth Will Speak to You”   ~ Navajo Proverb

Central to the Navajo culture is Nizhóní meaning beautiful. On one hand it can refer to something that's attractive, and on the other it refers to something that is good. This is because the Navajo idea of beauty goes beyond appearances. Beauty is a sense of being, and is comprised of harmony and balance that is felt within.

Come to Know Navajo Beauty

The Navajo way of life is deeply rooted in their relationship with the land. Like many Native Americans, the Navajos do believe that, “the whole land is sacred.” A member of the Navajo describes the religious significance of land, “Every inch of ground, all vegetation and the fauna on it are considered sacred. . .

Tyrell Descheny

Tyrell’s first job was caring for and shearing his family sheep; they had 460 at one point! Growing up on his traditional home land, the Navajo Nation, he spent a lot of time with elders, his grandmother in particular, who had a profound impact on him. Through his own curiosity, ingenuity, and some help from his grandmother, he has become an exceptional wool weaver and artisan. For Tyrell, weaving isn’t just a hobby; it’s something he wants to practice and perfect for the rest of his life.

Tyrell will spend a day with us sharing his story, his craft and if we are lucky, some traditional foods. Follow him on instagram or Facebook to see more of his extraordinary art and lessons in living Navajo in a modern world!
